Type an equation or expression – or use the maths keyboard – and get exact answers with the working shown.
Use ^ for powers (x^2), sqrt() or √, pi or π. The × sign is optional: 2x, 3(x+1). For a system put each equation on its own line or separate them with ; – Enter solves, Shift+Enter adds a new line.

Runs entirely in your browser: nothing you type is sent to a server. Results are checked numerically, but please double-check anything important.
How to use it
Type an equation such as 3(x - 2) = 2x + 5 and press Solve (or Enter). Linear and quadratic equations are solved exactly with every step shown – for quadratics you get the discriminant Δ, real or complex roots and the factored form. Higher-degree polynomials are factored with the rational root theorem where possible; any remaining roots are found numerically. Other equations (with roots, trigonometric functions, logarithms) are solved numerically and checked.
For a system of two or three linear equations, put each equation on a new line or separate them with a semicolon: 2x + y = 5; x - y = 1. The solution uses Cramer’s rule (determinants) and, if the system has no single solution, elimination.
Without an equals sign, the input is treated as an expression: choose Simplify, Expand or Factor, or Derivative (d/dx, optionally evaluated at a point) and Integral (indefinite, or definite with limits). Turn on the maths keyboard for buttons with powers, roots, π, functions and fractions – handy on a phone. The page address updates with your input, so you can bookmark or share a solution.
Frequently asked questions
Which equations can it solve?
Linear and quadratic equations (with steps), polynomial equations of any degree (exact rational roots plus numerical roots), equations with fractions, systems of 2–3 linear equations, and many other equations numerically – for example with square roots, sin, cos, ln or |x|. Inequalities are not supported yet.
Does it show complex solutions?
Yes. If the discriminant of a quadratic is negative you get the complex roots, e.g. x² + 1 = 0 gives x = −i and x = i. Complex roots of higher-degree polynomials are shown too.
How do I type powers, roots and π?
Use ^ for powers (x^2 or x²), sqrt(…) or √ for square roots, pi or π, and e. Multiplication signs are optional: 2x, 3(x+1) and 2πr all work. The maths keyboard has buttons for all of these.
Is my input sent anywhere?
No. The solver runs in your browser. The extra algebra module used for some expressions is loaded from this site, not a third party, and only when needed.
Can I use it for homework?
It is a good way to check your answers and learn the method from the steps. Do the working yourself first – teachers usually want to see your own reasoning.
